For this interview, I continue with the history of the France National Team under Henri Michel, season by season, with the 1986/87 season.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Henri Michel a débuté sa troisième saison aux commandes avec une troisième place à la Coupe du monde mais avec de nombreux retraités comme Giresse, Bossis et Rocheteau. Était-il évident que ce serait une année difficile ?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Oui, car le groupe qualificatif pour l’Euro 1988 était relevé avec l’URSS, qui venait de faire une très bonne Coupe du monde et qui serait l’adversaire numéro 1 des Bleus, puisque seule la première place était qualificative. Il fallait donc prendre le maximum de points contre la RDA, l’Islande et la Norvège et au moins les partager avec les Soviétiques. Ce n’était pas évident du tout, même si c’était jouable sur le papier.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): Yes, because the qualifying group for Euro 1988 was raised with the USSR, which had just had a very good World Cup and which would be the number 1 opponent of the Blues, since only the first place was qualifying. It was therefore necessary to take the maximum points against the East Germany, Iceland and Norway and at least share them with the Soviets. It was not obvious at all, even if it was playable on paper.

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Pas vraiment, c’était un match estival, qui a heureusement disparu aujourd’hui parce qu’il arrivait vraiment trop tôt dans la saison, alors que les championnats nationaux reprenaient à peine (ou n’avaient pas encore repris, comme la Série A). C’est une équipe très expérimentale avec seulement trois joueurs aguerris (Bats, Battiston et Amoros) et deux autres qui étaient au Mexique (Ferreri et Stopyra). Boli et Buscher font leurs débuts, Poullain, Thouvenel et Bijotat n’ont eu qu’une seule sélection avant. C’est une équipe de France B.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): Not really, it was a summer game, which fortunately disappeared today because it really came too early in the season, when the national championships were barely resuming (or had not yet resumed, like Serie A ). It's a very experimental team with only three seasoned players (Bats, Battiston and Amoros) and two others who were in Mexico (Ferreri and Stopyra). Boli and Buscher make their debuts, Poullain, Thouvenel and Bijotat had only one selection before. It's a France B team.

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): En 1975 déjà, les Bleus de Stefan Kovacs avaient fait match nul en Islande (0-0), et ça leur avait coûté en partie la qualification à l’Euro. Dans un groupe difficile, c’est mauvais signe de perdre des points contre les adversaires a priori les plus faibles. Ce n’était pas non plus une catastrophe, mais les Bleus avaient déjà la pression avant de recevoir l’URSS, avec une victoire impérative.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): Already in 1975, the Blues of Stefan Kovacs had drawn in Iceland (0-0), and that had partly cost them the qualification for the Euro. In a difficult group, it is a bad sign to lose points against opponents who are a priori the weakest. It was not a disaster either, but the Blues were already under pressure before receiving the USSR, with an imperative victory.

Quand on a vu les carrières internationales de Vercruysse, Ferreri ou même Touré, il est évident de Genghini n’était pas inférieur, loin de là. Mais visiblement Henri Michel ne le tenait pas en grande estime. C’est dommage, car il n’avait que 28 ans et il aurait pu apporter son expérience dans une équipe qui en manquait beaucoup.

They had faced the same opponents in the World Cup just months earlier, but this time the gulf was apparent in the teams and Lobanovsky’s team with many of his Dinamo Kiev players won (2-0). Did this match sum up the reality of France’s problems?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Jouer cette équipe-là avec une défense centrale Boli-Jeannol était suicidaire, surtout avec Belanov et Zavarov en face. Pourtant, la première mi-temps a été d’un très bon niveau, et les Bleus ont répondu au défi technique des Soviétiques, comme ils l’avaient fait à Leon. Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Il l’aurait été si la France avait battu l’URSS un mois plus tôt. Mais désormais, après des débuts aussi faibles, les Bleus devaient gagner quasiment tous leurs matchs restants pour avoir une chance de se qualifier. A Leipzig, effectivement, ils font jeu égal avec la RDA, ils dominent même, mais pour la quatrième fois consécutive ils sont incapables de marquer le moindre but. Ça n’était arrivé qu’une fois dans leur histoire, en 1924-1925 ! Et ça n’arrivera qu’une seule fois depuis, en 2013 (5 matchs sans but).

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): It would have been if France had beaten the USSR a month earlier. But now, after such a weak start, the Blues needed to win almost all of their remaining games to have a chance of progressing. In Leipzig, indeed, they are on a par with the GDR, they even dominate, but for the fourth consecutive time they are unable to score a single goal. It only happened once in their history, in 1924-1925! And it will only happen once since, in 2013 (5 games without a goal).

C’était la première victoire des Bleus depuis le Mexique, mais elle arrive beaucoup trop tard, et contre une équipe vraiment faible. Carmelo Micciche brillait avec le FC Metz, mais lui aussi était un bon joueur de club, sans plus. Et on ne le reverra qu’une fois en sélection contre la Norvège le match suivant. Il n’a fait que passer, sans laisser de trace.

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Au moment du match contre l’Islande, on ne savait pas encore qu’il allait terminer sa carrière avec la Juventus (le 17 mai, trois semaines plus tard). mais on s’en doutait un peu, tant sa dernière saison à Turin avait été laborieuse (41 matchs, 5 buts). C’est un très grand regret de ne pas l’avoir vu quitter les Bleus au Mexique sur une finale contre l’Argentine de Maradona. En sélection, il a clairement fait la saison de trop. C’est tout à son honneur d’avoir voulu continuer après la Coupe du monde, il n’était pas obligé, mais ça n’a servi à rien. En France, on n’attendait plus rien de lui en 1987, on voyait bien qu’il était usé, et que mentalement quelque chose avait lâché depuis la finale du Heysel en 1985.

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Je ne dirais pas ça, pour moi les défaites contre Israël et la Bulgarie en 1993 ou celles contre le Mexique et l’Afrique du Sud en 2010 sont bien pires. En juin 1987, les Bleus étaient démunis, démotivés, sans ressource, sans idée, ils n’y croyaient déjà plus. C’est le terme d’une saison complètement ratée mais la défaite à Oslo n’est pas une rupture, plutôt le prolongement d’une glissade qui continuera jusqu’en 1989, voire jusqu’en 1993. J’ai quand même un regret, même si ça n’aurait pas changé grand chose : Platini et Cantona se sont manqués de peu, puisque le deuxième a fait ses débuts en août à Berlin. J’aurais bien aimé les voir jouer ensemble.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): I wouldn't say that, for me the defeats against Israel and Bulgaria in 1993 or those against Mexico and South Africa in 2010 are much worse. In June 1987, the Blues were destitute, demotivated, without resources, without ideas, they no longer believed in it. Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Ce n’est pas faux, sauf que c’est oublier un peu vite que les Bleus avaient encore un statut (champions d’Europe en titre, troisième à la Coupe du monde) et que ne pas participer à l’Euro 1988 était considéré comme un échec. En fait, le problème vient surtout que le départ de Michel Hidalgo s’est sans doute fait deux ans trop tôt, et que Henri Michel n’a pas pu justement organiser cette transition comme il aurait pu le faire s’il était arrivé à l’été 1986.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): It's not false, except that it's forgetting a little quickly that the Blues still had a status (current European champions, third at the World Cup) and that not participating in Euro 1988 was considered like a failure. In fact, the problem comes mainly from the fact that the departure of Michel Hidalgo was probably two years too early, and that Henri Michel could not precisely organize this transition as he could have done if he had arrived at the summer of 1986.

Il n’y avait plus de liant au milieu, les attaquants étaient livrés à eux-mêmes et les buts devenaient de plus en plus rares. En fait, l’équipe de France jouait encore comme avant 1986 mais n’en avait plus les moyens. Platini s’en souviendra un an plus tard quand il deviendra sélectionneur, en construisant une équipe de contre organisée pour le duo Papin-Cantona.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): Because the great providers of goal opportunities who were Giresse and Rocheteau had left the selection, and Platini had too many seasons. Je lui avais écrit une lettre et il m’avait gentiment répondu, sur une page de cahier à petits carreaux. Je n’ai plus en tête le détail de ses réponses, mais d’évidence c’était un fardeau trop lourd à porter pour lui, il ne se voyait pas du tout comme le « nouveau Platini ». C’était un très bon joueur de club, mais il n’avait pas le niveau international, tout comme après lui Camel Meriem ou Marvin Martin, entre autres.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): I remember interviewing him a year later, in the summer of 1987, when I was preparing for the entrance exam to journalism school. I had written him a letter and he had answered me kindly, on a notebook page with small squares. I no longer have in mind the details of his answers, but obviously it was too heavy a burden for him to bear, he did not see himself at all as the “new Platini”. He was a very good club player, but he did not have the international level, just like Camel Meriem or Marvin Martin, among others, after him.

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Ça n’a rien d’étonnant, c’étaient de bons joueurs, mais ils n’avaient pas le niveau pour une équipe de France qui jouait désormais pour gagner des titres. Ils auraient pu faire illusion dans les années 1960 ou 1970, mais pas après la période 1982-1986. Stéphane Paille était pourtant vu comme quasiment l’égal d’un Cantona à cette époque, comme quoi être un joueur prometteur à 21 ou 22 ans n’offre aucune garantie d’avenir.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): It is not surprising, they were good players, but they did not have the level for a French team which was now playing to win titles. They could have deceived in the 1960s or 1970s, but not after the period 1982-1986. Stéphane Paille was however seen as almost the equal of a Cantona at that time, as what being a promising player at 21 or 22 offers no guarantee for the future.

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Non, je ne crois pas. Comme je l’ai dit plus haut, il s’est retrouvé en charge d’une équipe déjà quasiment complète à l’été 1984, et n’a pas eu le temps d’essayer grand chose avant 1986, hormis Papin. En fait il s’est trouvé un peu dans la même situation que Domenech en 2005, à la différence près que ce dernier avait eu une saison pour faire des essais, d’ailleurs pas concluants. Michel s’est retrouvé dans une période creuse comme il y en a régulièrement, et ses choix étaient limités. Les leaders qu’auraient pu être Bats, Amoros, Stopyra ou Fernandez n’ont pas vraiment pris le relais, et Papin ne s’est affirmé que plus tard.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): No, I do not think so. As I said above, he found himself in charge of an already almost complete team in the summer of 1984, and did not have time to try much before 1986, except Papin. In fact he found himself in somewhat the same situation as Domenech in 2005, with the difference that the latter had had a season to do trials, which were inconclusive. Michel found himself in a slack period as there are regularly, and his choices were limited. Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Beaucoup d’inquiétude. L’enthousiasme des deux premières saisons est retombé, la génération Platini disparait, les matchs sont décevants autant dans le fond (une seule victoire contre l’Islande, pour la troisième équipe mondiale !) que dans la forme.
