Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Lorsque Jacquet a établi sa liste définitive pour l'Euro, Cantona et Ginola étaient absents. Si cette décision était attendue par la presse française, elle a été une grande surprise pour la presse anglaise. Jacquet anticipait-il 1998 en imposant Zidane ?

Soccernostalgia Question: When Jacquet made his final list for the Euros, Cantona and Ginola were missing. While this decision was expected from the French Press, it was a big surprise in English Press. Was Jacquet looking ahead to 1998 in his decision to impose Zidane?

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French): Les journaux anglais regrettent bien entendu l’absence de Cantona et Ginola. Ces joueurs brillent en Premier League et les Anglais, organisateurs du tournoi, auraient aimé les voir en phase finale avec leur sélection. Aimé Jacquet s’est expliqué à propos de Cantona. Il l’a rencontré, ils ont discuté ensemble et le sélectionneur a décidé de l’écarter. Point. C’est ainsi que fonctionne un sélectionneur. Il faut rappeler qu’à l’époque, le championnat anglais n’est pas encore au top comme aujourd’hui. La référence est plutôt l’Italie, où jouent d’ailleurs les meilleurs Français. Dans les mois qui précèdent l’Euro, Jacquet a son groupe en tête. Y incorporer Cantona et Ginola aurait été trop compliqué. Je ne pense pas, par ailleurs, que Jacquet “pensait à 1998” en établissant sa liste pour l’Euro 1996. Il ne savait pas lui-même s’il serait encore sélectionneur à l’issue de l’Euro. Ce qui importait pour lui était avant tout d’être performant à l’Euro.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation): The English newspapers, of course, lamented the absence of Cantona and Ginola. These players were shining in the Premier League, and the English, the tournament organizers, would have liked to see them in the final stages with their national team. Aimé Jacquet explained his decision regarding Cantona. He met with him, they talked, and the coach decided to leave him out. Period. That's how a national team coach operates. It's worth remembering that at the time, the English league wasn't yet the top league it is today. The benchmark was more in Italy, where the best French players also played. In the months leading up to the Euros, Jacquet had his squad in mind. Including Cantona and Ginola would have been too complicated. I don't think, moreover, that Jacquet was "thinking about 1998" when he drew up his list for Euro 1996. He himself didn't know if he would still be the national team coach after the Euros. La France a battu la Finlande (2-0) le 29 mai 1996 à Strasbourg. S'en est suivie une importante victoire (1-0) à l'extérieur contre l'Allemagne à Stuttgart le 1er juin. Enfin, une autre victoire (2-0) contre l'Arménie a eu lieu le 5 juin à Villeneuve-d'Ascq. Jacquet a également mis fin à la rotation du capitanat en nommant Didier Deschamps capitaine officiel de l'équipe. La France abordait-elle la compétition avec une confiance en soi exemplaire ?

Soccernostalgia Question: In the friendlies prior to the Euros, France picked up three wins and Jacquet his unbeaten record as France manager. France defeated Finland (2-0) on May 29, 1996, at Strasbourg. This was followed by an important (1-0) away win against Germany at Stuttgart on Juen 1^st. Finally, another (2-0) win over Armenia on June 5, at Villeneuve d'Ascq. Jacquet also ended the policy of rotating the captaincy by appointing Didier Deschamps as the official Captain of the squad. Did France enter the competition high on confidence?

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French): La plupart des joueurs, de même que le sélectionneur et son staff, vont vivre leur première phase finale (Seuls Blanc, Deschamps, Angloma et Martini avait disputé l’Euro précédent en Suède). Il y a donc une part d’inconnu. Mais les bons résultats de l’équipe, et les performances des joueurs en clubs renforcent leur confiance. En outre, un phénomène nouveau s’opère durant le tournoi : un grand nombre de joueurs sont sur le point de rejoindre un grand club étranger à l’issue du tournoi : Zidane à la Juventus, Djorkaeff à l’Inter, Blanc à Barcelone, Dugarry à l’AC Milan, Leboeuf à Chelsea, Lizarazu à Bilbao, Thuram à Parme, Martins à la Corogne… Les effets de l’arrêt Bosman deviennent concrets. Les joueurs concernés sont valorisés par les transferts, ce qui doit influer sur leur confiance. En outre, la victoire à Stuttgart contre l’Allemagne est toute aussi déterminante, d’autant qu’il s’agit, on ne le sait pas encore, du futur vainqueur de l'épreuve. Malgré tout, la presse et le public émettent des doutes sur les capacités de leur équipe nationale. On est encore nostalgique des années Platini-Hidalgo et l’on rêve d’une équipe conquérante avec un jeu séduisant.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation): Most of the players, as well as the coach and his staff, will be experiencing their first major tournament (only Blanc, Deschamps, Angloma, and Martini had played in the previous European Championship in Sweden). There is therefore an element of the unknown. But the team's good results and the players' performances at their clubs are boosting their confidence. Furthermore, a new phenomenon is taking place during the tournament: a large number of players are on the verge of joining a major foreign club after the tournament: Zidane to Juventus, Djorkaeff to Inter Milan, Blanc to Barcelona, Dugarry to AC Milan, Leboeuf to Chelsea, Lizarazu to Athletic Bilbao, Thuram to Parma, Martins to Deportivo La Coruña… The effects of the Bosman ruling are becoming tangible. The players involved are valued more highly by these transfers, which must be influencing their confidence. Furthermore, the victory in Stuttgart against Germany was equally crucial, especially since it was, as yet unseen, the eventual winner of the tournament. Nevertheless, the press and the public harbored doubts about the national team's capabilities. There was still nostalgia for the Platini-Hidalgo era, and people dreamed of a conquering team with an attractive style of play.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Cependant, l'accident de voiture de Zidane avant l'Euro allait impacter ses performances lors du tournoi. Zidane venait de signer à la Juventus et « L'Avvocato » Agnelli avait fait des remarques sur ses performances. Avec le recul, aurait-il fallu laisser Zidane au repos lors de certains matchs ?

Soccernostalgia Question: However, Zidane’s car accident ahead of the Euros, would affect his displays in the Tournament. Zidane had just signed for Juventus and ‘L’Avvocato’ Agnelli made remarks about his performances. In hindsight, should Zidane have been rested in some matches?

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French): Il est toujours facile de refaire l’histoire. Quand un joueur n’est pas performant, on se dit qu’on aurait mieux fait de le laisser sur le banc. C’est logique. Zidane n’est en effet pas en capacité de jouer comme il sait le faire en raison de l’accident de voiture où il s’est blessé à la cuisse. Il fait toutefois partie de ces joueurs d’exception qui, même diminués, peuvent changer le cours d’un match. Jacquet a tenté le pari. Peut-être aurait-il dû faire jouer Corentin Martins, en effet. Il faut rappeler que le joueur central de l’époque est encore Youri Djorkaeff qui, lui, affiche une belle forme.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation): It's always easy to rewrite history. When a player isn't performing well, we tell ourselves we would have been better off leaving him on the bench. That's understandable. Zidane wasn't able to play as he knew he could because of the car accident that injured his thigh. However, he's one of those exceptional players who, even when hampered, can change the course of a match. Jacquet took a gamble. Perhaps he should have played Corentin Martins instead. It's worth remembering that the central defender at the time was still Youri Djorkaeff, who was in excellent form.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Lors de l'Euro, la France a bien débuté en battant la Roumanie (1-0) le 10 juin à Newcastle. Elle a ensuite fait match nul (1-1) contre l'Espagne à Leeds le 15 juin. La France s'est qualifiée pour la phase de groupes en battant la Bulgarie (3-1) le 18 juin à Newcastle. Cependant, la presse française estimait que si la France avait conservé son avantage sur l'Espagne (l'Espagne a égalisé à la 85e minute), elle aurait pu laisser ses joueurs au repos contre la Bulgarie pour être plus fraîches lors des tours suivants. Était-ce le consensus général ?

Soccernostalgia Question: In the Euros, France started well by defeating Romania (1-0) on June 10^th at Newcastle. This was followed by a (1-1) tie against Spain at Leeds on Juen 15^th. France advanced from this group by defeating Bulgaria (3-1) on June 18^th at Newcastle. However, the French Press felt that had France held onto its advantage over Spain (Spain tied in the 85^th minute), they could have rested players against Bulgaria to be fresher in the later rounds. Was this the general consensus?

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French): Oui, elle aurait pu. Mais elle n’a pas. Il est toujours rageant de se faire égaliser dans les derniers instants du match, mais les Tricolores sont opposés à leur adversaire le plus solide du premier tour. Ce but n’a pas remis en cause leur qualification. Le premier tour des Bleus est toutefois remarquable, avec une victoire (1-0) sur la Roumanie, qu’elle avait déjà dominé en éliminatoires, et une autre plus nette (3-1) contre la Bulgarie, qu’elle n’avait plus joué depuis le fameux match de novembre 1993. On remarque l’extraordinaire solidité défensive des Tricolores, avec le trio Karembeu-Guérin-Deschamps au milieu, la défense centrale Blanc-Desailly et deux jeunes latéraux qui gagnent leur place durant le tournoi, Lizarazu et Thuram. Aimé Jacquet a imprimé son style, qui rappelle celui des Girondins de Bordeaux dans les années 1980. Devant, Djorkaeff bénéficie d’une grande liberté, et il est dommage que Zidane, on l’a dit plus haut, ne peut pas donner son rendement maximum. L’équipe joue souvent avec un seul attaquant (Dugarry ou Loko) mais ceux-ci rencontrent souvent des difficultés.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation): Yes, they could have. But they didn't. It's always frustrating to concede an equalizer in the dying moments of a match, but Les Bleus were facing their toughest opponent of the first round. This goal didn't jeopardize their qualification. The first round for Les Bleus was nonetheless remarkable, with a 1-0 victory over Romania, whom they had already beaten in qualifying, and another, more decisive 3-1 win against Bulgaria, whom they hadn't played since the famous match in November 1993. The extraordinary defensive solidity of Les Bleus was noteworthy, with the trio of Karembeu, Guérin, and Deschamps in midfield, the central defense of Blanc and Desailly, and two young full-backs who earned their places during the tournament, Lizarazu and Thuram. Aimé Jacquet has instilled his style, reminiscent of Bordeaux in the 1980s.
