For this interview, I start a new project as I look back at past performances of Dutch clubs in the European Cups.
This will be a semi-regular and continuous series.

Soccernostalgia Question: When Ajax
started the 1986/87, they had not done well in Europe for over a decade. Their
last European Cup trophy had been the 1973 Champions Cup with Cruyff as a
player. What were the expectations for the 1986/87 Cup Winners Cup with now
Johann Cruyff as a Manager?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite
Response: I think the Dutch fans didn't expect much. Johan did instill
lots of confidence and some bluster into the Ajax tribe, I guess, but Johan was
known to be a bit erratic and headstrong with some of his choices. He would
experiment a bit and there were the odd voices speaking up against Cruyff's
antics, so the current JC vibe (Johan is God) wasn't shared broadly back then.
That still have to come, among other things because of the European success he
would later have with Ajax and Barca.
Soccernostalgia Question: The major
transfers in the off-season had been the arrival of Danny Blind in defense and
Jan Wouters in midfield. In hindsight how was their arrival critical in the
European matches that season?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite
Response: JC did realise he needed more grit in the team. Blind was a
very offensive left back who earned his stripes in the successful Sparta side
of the 80s, in which Sparta regularly ended up in the top 5 and played European
football with mixed results. Van Gaal was the playmaker and they had a series
of young talents, among them Danny Blind, John de Wolf, Edwin Olde Riekerink en
Rene Eijer. Blind was a leader already and tactically strong. Same as Wouters
who was a key player at FC Utrecht. In these days, the Ajax purists didn't want
to see these players come in (they all wanted artists), but they did get the
grit and strong mentality of two players who would become club legends.
Soccernostalgia Question: While
eliminating Bursaspor in the first round always appeared like a formality, the
tie in the second round vs. Olympiakos could have bene tricky. Remember
Olympiakos had eliminated Ajax in the Champions Cup in 1983/84. Was there any
trepidation?? ahead of this match?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite
Response: Yes there was. This was also
due to the fact that back in the day, Greek, Turkish, Portuguese teams were
feared, as they didn't seem to play for the beauty of the game but they would
do anything to win. Cheat, waste time, provoke, work the ref, you name it.
Soccernostalgia Question: When the
springtime arrived, Ajax and some of its players had signaled the renewal of
Dutch Football with the National Team as well. Did Malmo appear an easy rival
by the Dutch press?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite
Response: Yes I think so. But not on
merit or any analysis, but more arrogance. Malmo is from Sweden. We are from
Holland. So we will win that. For a long time, we believed the Scandinavians,
the Icelanders, Fins and Scots would not be able to beat us. The Norwegians had
a strong team in the 80s though and Denmark obviously beat us in 1992's Euros
and slowly we had to get used to the fact that these "minions" could
play as well, Dutch arrogance.
I do remember the Malmo away game. Ajax was
having some issues with the squad and JC decided to take young Dennis Bergkamp
to Sweden. His parents didn't want to let him go due to some school thing, so
Dennis first went to his class that day and was transported swiftly to Malmo
after his school day ended. He joined the group and actually played 15 minutes
or so as right winger. JC was over the moon with Dennis but from these short
bursts versus Malmo, away and at home, it wasn't really clear that Dennis would
actually become one of the world's best 18 years olds.
I also remember that away match v Zaragoza.
That was a water ballet. Incredible rainfall in Spain and it was a joke to play
football. This was the first European goal of young Rob Witscge too. He scored
twice against Feyenoord earlier on that season.
Ajax scored 3 headers. Not very "Ajax
like" but Bosman was a monster with his forehead.
Soccernostalgia Question: By this
season, Marco Van Basten was starting to be known to the public outside of
Holland. During the season, it was announced that he would be on his way to AC
Milan the next season. Did this new level of attention, help Ajax’s cause in
European matches?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite
Response: Probably yes. It is hard to
say. But I think JC was aware he had gold in his hands and he was a master in
"playing" the media so he will have boosted the reputation of players
and talked them up. He also gave them confidence to play courageously. He could
also be vengeful. Later on Vanenburg clashed with JC. And Cruyff took revenge
by saying in the media that Vanenburg could never be a leader as he has a very
high-pitched voice.
Soccernostalgia Question: Though not
the same caliber as a team as Real Madrid or Barcelona, facing a Spanish
opponent was never to be taken lightly. How confident Ajax were going into
these ties?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite
Response: Ajax was and is always very
cocky. They really think they always have a chance. Sometimes it's true. Other
times.... not.

Soccernostalgia Question: In the
semifinals, in the first leg, Johnny Bosman stood out for his two goals, but
also his sending off? How did the media and Ajax fans view this sending off?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite
Response: Back in the day, the media
and the commentators saw it as a "unwelcome setback". Nothing more. I
think Blind was also suspended and Spelbos was injured. With Arnold Scholten in
the team the home game was high quality football even though Ajax only scored
once in the first hour or so. When Rijkaard scored the 3-0, the Ajax fans took
the pitch. Funnily enough, Ajax was never fined or punished for that.
Bosman about that incident: "I thoroughly
remember the finals, as I was biting my nails on the stands. I had some issue
with that Spanish defender, and he with me. It was a bit messy and it all
happened in a flash. I gave him a cookie and he had done something to me, so we
were both sent off. I actually played in the next final, a year later vs
Mechelen. We lost that one and I can't remember a single second hahahaha. You
only remember the ones you win." Cruyff had an interesting thought. Bosman
also got a yellow in the domestic competition which got him a suspension in the
Eredivisie. Cruyff thought the yellow was stupid. The red card vs Zaragoza was
not a big deal for him hahaha

Soccernostalgia Question: In the
end, Ajax were relatively comfortable in Europe that season. Besides Van
Basten, what other players stood out in the European matches?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite Response: I think in 87 Wouters
and Muhren were key strongholders in midfield. They were the captains of the
ship, they balanced out the very inconsistent performances of the big talents,
like Bosman and Rijkaard.
John
van't Schip was captain and he started to play more like a modern right winger
and playmaker (like Ziyech now or Berghuis). Schip lacked speed but he could
curl a ball into the box even with a defender in front of him and he had a
great pass and eye for the space so he also played the 10 role at times.
I
guess Stanley Menzo was also a spectacular guy to watch. A bit wild at times
but super athletic and great football player too
Silooy
looked a bit young and weak, Verlaat lacked speed but was a great header and a
cocky defender.
Winter
was the kind of player every football expert raved about but no one in the
"fan category" then saw his great qualities so much, as he played
frugal, smart, kept the ball, pass and move. A bit like the Barca tika taka
players would later on. Never scored amazing goals, never dribbled past 3 defenders.
Just playing simple, Wim Jansen style.
Soccernostalgia Question: As
mentioned earlier, there was a feel of renewal and re-emergence of Dutch
Football in this Spring of 1987. Is this trophy a reference point for that
Generation?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite Response: Absolutely! Up until
that time, we were a bit failing. No big tournaments, no European success to
speak of. JC brought us our confidence back and Ajax playing these finals. In
1988 Oranje and PSV won trophies and onwards we went.

Soccernostalgia Question: The Dutch
press sometimes appeared doubtful of Cruyff’s coaching competence. Did this win
make some change their opinions of him or were the players credited?
Jan Roskott @DutchSoccerSite
Response: I guess JC was
seen as a cocky gambler. JC would play 3 defenders at times. Or he would put
his best attacking mid in the controlling role in midfield. Stuff that would
confuse most people but he'd always have a story. There were two camps: the
ones that adored everything he did and the ones who thought he was reckless.
The Ajax board actually belonged to the second category! The media were also
divided. Some reporters loved what he did, others felt he was irresponsible.
The credits would go to both, as the saying goes: you're only as good as the
players you have. When JC returned to Ajax he will have seen the amazing number
of talent and decided "ok, with this lot I can get somewhere...". I
don't think he would have gone to Feyenoord as a coach, simply because he
wouldn't risk his status. When he left and signed for Barca, more people got
convinced he's actually a very very good coach.
