For this interview, I continue to look back at Vittorio Pozzo’s era as Italy National Team Manager, with the 1930/31 season.

This will be a semi-regular and continuous series.

The Interview in in English as well as Italian.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota is a former freelance journalist in Biella (Italy), living in Odense (Denmark) from 2013, working as a Language teacher.

 

He is the author of “Danmark (1908-2018)” chronicling the history of the Danish National Team.

Soccernostalgia Question: What were the state of the affairs of the National Team in the beginning of 1930/31 with Vittorio Pozzo at the helm? How was his relations vis-à-vis the Federation?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Qual era lo stato delle cose della Nazionale all'inizio del 1930/31 con Vittorio Pozzo al timone? Come erano i suoi rapporti con la Federazione?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: His relations with the FIGC were always good. They gave him carte blanche, asking only for good results. For the 1930-31 season, the goal was to beat Austria, which never happened in the first 10 direct matches.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): I suoi rapporti con la Figc erano sempre buoni. Gli lasciavano carta bianca, chiedendogli solo buoni risultati. Per la stagione 1930-31, l´obiettivo era battere l´Austria, mai successo nei primi 10 confronti diretti.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: The first match of the 1930/31 season for the National team was a friendly vs. France at Bolgna on January 25^th, 1931. He gave International debuts to: Renato Cattaneo and Renato Cesarini. Both scored on their debuts, Cattaneo would only gain one more cap. Why was not he called up more despite scoring?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): La prima partita della stagione 1930/31 per la Nazionale fu un'amichevole contro la Francia a Bolgna il 25 gennaio 1931. Esordisce in nazionale a: Renato Cattaneo e Renato Cesarini. Entrambi hanno segnato all'esordio, Cattaneo guadagnerebbe solo una presenza in più. Perché non è stato convocato di più nonostante il gol?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Cattaneo was only used a couple of times, simply because Pozzo preferred both Costantino and Guaita. Despite being a prolific striker, the fact that he played in a small club, like Alessandria, paid off.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Cattaneo fu solo utilizzato un paio di volte, semplicemente perche´ Pozzo gli preferiva sia Costantino che Guaita. Pur essendo un attaccante prolifico, pagava forse il fatto di giocare in un piccolo club, come l´Alessandria.

Soccernostalgia Question: The other debutant was the Argentine Oriundi, Renato Cesarini. What can you say about his process to become an Oriundi and Pozzo’s role in it? Can you also discuss the concept of ‘Zona Cesarini’?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): L'altro esordiente è stato l'argentino Oriundi, Renato Cesarini. Cosa puoi dire del suo processo per diventare un ruolo di Oriundi e Pozzo in esso? Ci puoi parlare anche del concetto di “Zona Cesarini”?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Cesarini had grown up in Argentina but was born in Italy (Senigallia) from a very Italian family, so he must be considered a "sui generis" native. The definition Zona Cesarini was born in 1931 when Renato scored a goal at 90 against Hungary. Cesarini was a specialist in scoring goals in the last 5-6 minutes of play. It seems that the first to use it was the Roman journalist Eugenio Danese of Corriere dello Sport.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Cesarini era cresciuto in Argentina ma nato in Italia (Senigallia) da famiglia italianissima, quindi lo si deve considerare un oriundo “sui generis”. La definizione Zona Cesarini nasce nel 1931 quando Renato segna una rete al 90 contro l´Ungheria. Cesarini era specialista nel segnare reti negli ultimi 5-6 minuti di gioco. Pare che il primo ad utilizzarla fosse il giornalista romano Eugenio Danese del Corriere dello Sport.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: In this match v. France, Fulvio Bernardini was recalled after three years. What can you say about his years with the Azzuri with Pozzo?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): In questa partita contro la Francia, Fulvio Bernardini è stato richiamato dopo tre anni. Cosa dire dei suoi anni in azzurro con Pozzo?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Pozzo had great respect for Bernardini, but their relationship was often controversial and made up of misunderstandings. Pozzo considered him very gifted technically but not functional to the Azzurri's game, perhaps due to his scarce propensity to sacrifice.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Pozzo aveva un grande rispetto per Bernardini, ma il loro rapporto fu spesso controversiale e fatto di incomprensioni. Pozzo lo riteneva molto dotato tecnicamente ma non funzionale al gioco degli azzurri, forse per la sua scarsa propensione al sacrificio.

 

 

Soccernostalgia Question: The next match was a Dr. Gerö Cup match vs. Austria at Milano on February 22^nd, 1931. Italy won an important match against one of the best sides in Europe, the ‘Wunderteam’ of Hugo Meisl. How was this victory viewed in the press and by the public?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): La partita successiva fu una partita di Dr. Gerö Cup contro l'Austria a Milano il 22 febbraio 1931. L'Italia vinse una partita importante contro una delle migliori squadre d'Europa, il "Wunderteam" di Hugo Meisl. Come è stata vista questa vittoria dalla stampa e dal pubblico?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Like a triumph, as it should be. The Italian press not only appreciated the strength and commitment of the Azzurri, but also and above all their technique. And in Milan, after many years, many spectators present at the race still remembered Meazza's feats.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Come un trionfo, come e´ giusto che fosse. La stampa italiana non ha apprezzato soltanto il vigore e l´impegno degli azzurri, ma anche e soprattutto la loro tecnica. E a Milano, dopo molti anni, molti spettatori presenti alla gara ricordavano ancora le prodezze di Meazza.

Soccernostalgia Question: The next match was also as part of the Dr. Gerö Cup. Italy faced Switzerland at Berne on March 29^th, 1931. Italy seemed headed for a loss after André ‘Trello’ Abegleen’s penalty kick. Renato Cesarini tied the match near the end of the match. What are your thoughts on this match?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Anche la partita successiva faceva parte della Dr. Gerö Cup. L'Italia affrontò la Svizzera a Berna il 29 marzo 1931. L'Italia sembrava persa dopo il calcio di rigore di André 'Trello' Abegleen. Renato Cesarini ha pareggiato la partita verso la fine della partita. Cosa ne pensi di questa partita?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Italy, having fallen behind on a penalty awarded by the English referee, had not expressed themselves at their best, but did not deserve to lose. Luckily Cesarini's equalizer goal arrived at the last minute. Perhaps the Azzurri suffered too much from the defensiveness of the hosts, who practiced the so-called "verro" by Karl Rappen, which in the 1960s became the "Italian Catenaccio (bolt)".

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): L´Italia, passata in svantaggio su un rigore concesso dall´arbitro inglese, non si era espressa al meglio, ma non meritava di perdere. Per fortuna arrivo´ in extremis la rete del pareggio di Cesarini. Forse gli azzurri patirono troppo il difensivismo dei padroni di casa, che praticavano il cosiddetto “boar (verro)” di Karl Rappen, che negli anni 60 divenne il “catenaccio all´Italiana”.

Soccernostalgia Question: In April, Italy traveled to the Iberian Peninsula for two matches against Portugal and Spain. On April 12^th, 1931, at Oporto, Portugal hosted Italy. Italy came away with a (2-0) win. What are your thoughts on this match?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Ad aprile, l'Italia si è recata nella penisola iberica per due partite contro Portogallo e Spagna. Il 12 aprile, 1931, ad Oporto, il Portogallo ha ospitato l'Italia. L'Italia ha vinto (2-0). Cosa ne pensi di questa partita?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was a bit of a strange game, played on a pitch completely devoid of grass. It was scorching heat and the Azzurri secured the victory with goals from Orsi and Ferrari, both in the first half. Portugal had serious political problems in that historical period and a revolution was feared at any moment. Around the stadium in Oporto, where the Italians were very well received, there were many soldiers with bayonets.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Fu una gara un po´ strana, giocata su un campo completamente privo di erba. Faceva un caldo torrido e gli azzurri si assicurarono la vittoria con le reti di Orsi e Ferrari, entrambe nel primo tempo. Il Portogallo aveva in quel periodo storico seri problemi politici e si temeva una rivoluzione da un momento all´altro. Intorno allo stadio di Oporto, dove peraltro gli italiani furono accolti benissimo, cerano molti soldati con la baionetta.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: A week later on April 19^th, 1931, Italy faced Spain at Bilbao. Spain were held scoreless. Was this considered an improvement after the loss in the previous year?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Una settimana dopo, il 19 aprile 1931, l'Italia affrontò la Spagna a Bilbao. La Spagna si è tenuta a reti inviolate. Questo è stato considerato un miglioramento dopo la perdita dell'anno precedente?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Sure, but it was a game played in very bad conditions. It was raining heavily in Bilbao and the pitch was completely puddled, soaked. Note the merciless marking of Cesarini, right wing, on the Spanish full-back Aguirrezabala. caught by their audience. At one point the Spaniard, offended, voluntarily left the pitch. Meazza had a great chance to score but his shot on goal was stopped by a puddle.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Sicuramente, ma fu una gara giocata in condizioni pessime. Pioveva forte a Bilbao e il campo era completamente pieno di pozzanghere, inzuppato. Da notare la marcatura spietata di Cesarini, ala destra, sul terzino spagnolo Aguirrezabala. beccato dal proprio pubblico. Lo spagnolo ad un certo punto, offeso, abbandono´ volontariamente il terreno di gioco. Meazza ebbe una grossa occasione per segnare ma il suo tiro in porta fu fermato da una pozzanghera.

Soccernostalgia Question: This season ended on a positive note as Italy were defeated Scotland (3-0) at Roma on May 20^th, 1931. How was a win against a British side regarded at the time?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Questa stagione si è conclusa con una nota positiva quando l'Italia ha sconfitto la Scozia (3-0) in casa della Roma il 20 maggio 1931. Com'era considerata la vittoria contro una squadra britannica all'epoca?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Very good. It was a clear and indisputable victory, which closed a wonderful season, which ended with an unbeatable match. It must be said, however, that Scotland was not the strongest British team at that time. It would have served, as I arrived, a confrontation with the British.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Molto bene. Fu una vittoria netta e indiscutibile, che chiudeva una meravigliosa stagione, chiusasi con l´imbattibilita´. Va pero´ detto che in quel periodo la Scozia non era la più´ forte formazione britannica. Sarebbe servito, come arrivo´ poi, un confronto con gli inglesi.

Soccernostalgia Question: Just like the previous season, Pozzo maintained his defensive trident of Juventus: Combi, Rosetta and Caligaris. Another 1934 winner, Attilio Ferraris IV was also a regular now. Eraldo Monzeglio deputized Rosetta on a few occasions. Was the 1934 defense at this point virtually set by Pozzo?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Proprio come la stagione precedente, Pozzo ha mantenuto il suo tridente difensivo della Juventus: Combi, Rosetta e Caligaris. Un altro vincitore del 1934, Attilio Ferraris IV ora era anche un regolare. Eraldo Monzeglio ha sostituito in alcune occasioni Rosetta. La difesa del 1934 a questo punto era virtualmente impostata da Pozzo?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: I would say yes. Caligaris was more physical than Rosetta, but the two complemented each other. As for Ferraris IV, Pozzo's merit was to bring him back to an athlete's life, after a period in which he smoked several cigarettes and indulged too much in the nightlife.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Direi proprio di si. Caligaris era più fisico di Rosetta, ma i due si completavano. Quanto a Ferraris IV, il merito di Pozzo fu quello di riportarlo ad una vita da atleta, dopo un periodo in cui fumava parecchie sigarette e si concedeva troppo alla vita notturna.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: Pozzo was satisfied with Meazza, Orsi and Ferrari upfront. Luigi Bertolini was also now a regular in midfield. Was most of the 1934 puzzle already complete at this point?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Pozzo soddisfatto di Meazza, Orsi e Ferrari in anticipo. Anche Luigi Bertolini era ormai un titolare a centrocampo. La maggior parte del puzzle del 1934 era già completo a questo punto?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Bertolini was a midfielder, who mainly had defensive duties. Meazza, Orsi and Ferrari were about to establish themselves as world-class stars. Players of class and quality, which few other teams could count.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian):  Bertolini era un mediano, che aveva soprattutto compiti difensivo. Meazza, Orsi e Ferrari stavano per affermarsi come stelle di valore mondiale. Giocatori di classe e qualita´,che poche altre squadre potevano annoverare.

Soccernostalgia Question: In closing, what is your analysis of this season 1930-31 for the National Team?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): In conclusione, qual è la tua analisi di questa stagione 1930-31 per la Nazionale?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: A practically perfect season, a big step forward in the gradual growth of a team that would dominate the international scene until the outbreak of the Second World War. Let's not forget the rivals we faced, all of the highest level. Pozzo had developed in a short time a formidable machine, not only strong in defense, but complete in all departments.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Una stagione praticamente perfetta, un grosso passo avanti nella crescita graduale di una squadra che avrebbe dominato la scena internazionale fino allo scoppio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Non dimentichiamo poi, i rivali affrontati, tutti di primissimo piano. Pozzo aveva messo a punto in poco tempo una macchina formidabile, non solo forte in difesa, ma completa in tutti i reparti.
