Events and Consequences, Part Twenty-Two

 

1- Event:

Berti Vogts injured in the right knee during the Champions Cup match between Borussia Moenchengladbach and Internazionale Milano in the Fall of 1971.


Consequence:

He had to be operated at Koln University in February 1972 and had to miss the 1972 Euros.

2- Event:

In 1999, Brazil National Team Manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo appointed Cafu as Brazil Captain for the 1999 Copa America.

 

Consequence:

Leonardo walked out of Copa America squad saying he felt unmotivated. There were rumors that he was annoyed at being overlooked for the captaincy

3- Event:

In 1972, Colin Todd (Derby County) and Alan Hudson (Chelsea) refused to join the England U-23 side on a tour.

 

Consequence:

The pair were banned for 2 years from any internationals.

 

 



4- Event:

In February 1998, Blackburn Rovers’ Chris Sutton refused to play for the England ‘B’ squad vs. Chile.

 

Consequence:

England Manager Glen Hoddle refused to consider him for the 1998 World Cup squad as a result.

 

 



5- Event:

Brazilian defender Josimar and his his off-field problems and arrests in 1989 and 1990.

 

Consequence:

He was in line to be included as part of the 1990 World Cup squad. However, Brazil Manager Sebastiao Lazaroni decided to not to include him in his plans because of the disciplinary issues.
