the match through food poisoning.

West
Germany defeated Czechoslovakia in a high profile friendly between two
qualified nations. Italy continued its poor form by losing at East Germany.
This was Giancarlo Antognoni’s first match back for Italy after his life
threatening injury suffered in the league in November.
Peru
defeated Hungary and France in a tour of Europe.
Dominique
Bathenay was called up by France for the first time in two years for the
friendly with Peru. It would turn out to be his last cap.
England
continued its winning streak by defeating Wales.
Important
to note that the Falklands War started this month, a conflict that would
involve Argentina and the United Kingdom.
Belgium
defeated Bulgaria in a friendly, however, Rene Vandereycken’s injury in this
match, ruled him out of the World Cup. Jos Darden was called up as his
replacement.
For
their friendly vs. Spain, Switzerland goalkeeper Erich Burgener was appointed
captain for this match in recognition of his 50th cap.

Romania
started the EC qualifiers by defeating Cyprus. The majority of nations played
friendlies vs. club sides. Paolo Rossi made his much awaited comeback (back
from suspension) for Italy in a friendly vs. Switzerland. England continued its
winning ways (and clean sheets) by defeating Holland.
Atanas
Parzhelov managed Bulgaria for the last time in a friendly vs. France.
Brazil
heavily defeated Republic of Ireland (7-0). Republic of Ireland’s tour was
beset with organizational problems, as well as non-availability of players due
to the Falklands conflict.
Argentina
played friendlies with the Falklands conflict ongoing.

and July
Franz
Beckenbauer played his farewell match in a friendly with his last club SV
Hamburg vs. the national team.
England
played in consecutive days vs. Iceland and Finland and maintained its unbeaten
run.
France
was defeated by Wales, otherwise most teams tested club sides.
Brazil’s
Antonio Careca was selected in Brazil’s World cup Finals squad, however, an
injury deprived him of the tournament and he was replaced with Roberto
Dinamite.
