The
Asian Zone continued its qualifiers with Australia in action.
New
Zealand set a new goalscoring record in World Cup qualifiers by defeating Fiji
13-0. The previous record belonged to West Germany who scored 12 goals vs.
Cyprus in 1969.
The
Uruguay Federation ordered Penarol back from tour to have its players at the
disposal of the national team. Uruguay Manager Roque Maspoli had threatened to
resign with his entire staff if Penarol did not provide the called up players.
Peru
gained ground in its qualification group by defeating Colombia at home and
Specially Uruguay away.
This
home defeat would cost Uruguay dearly, who felt they were favored in the group
after having triumphed in the Mundialito Tournament in januey.
Romania
played a friendly vs. Borussia Dortmund, after which Romania’s Marcel Radacanu
defected and stayed at Dortmund until 1988.
France
played a club side, West Germany’s VfB Stuttgart, as its traditional curtain
raiser for the season, this match is remembered for France’s Captain Michel
Platini being constantly jeered and heckled by the home crowd to the point that
Michel Hidalgo had no choice but to substitute him.
Defending
World Cup Champions Argentina toured by playing vs. club sides.

The
final phase of Qualification from the European zone started this month. Ruud
Gullit and Frank Rijkaard made their debuts for the Dutch national team in a
friendly vs. Switzerland (Gullit replaced Rijkaard for the second half).
In
the days leading up to the match, Ajax Amsterdam officials complained that
Frank Rijkaard, Wim Kieft and Keje Molenaar were too young to be selected for
the national team.
The
Bernd Schuster rift with the German National team continued, when in a
newspaper interview, he accused
Breitner and Rummenigge of running the team and maninpulating Juup Derwall.
Derwall
tried in vain to get in contact with Schuster for an explanation but could not.
He
indefinitely suspended Schuster from the team.
Bernd
Dietz also questioned the inclusion of Breitner, claiming that he would bring
disharmony within the squad.
Derwall
dropped Dietz from the Poland match (that the Germans won) as well, effectively
ending his international career.
Poland
was able to lineup the reprieved suspended players from the previous season:
Zbigniew Boniek, Jozef Mlynarczyk and Wladyslaw Zmuda.
Peru
tied Uruguay at home to still maintain the upper hand in qualification.
Czechoslovakia
defeated Wales in a key matchup. This was wales’ first defeat in the
qualifiers. Czechoslovakia’s Zdenek Nehoda earned his record 78th
cap in this match.
USSR
for its part defeated Turkey at home in only its third match of the
qualifications. Wales lead the group, though they had played more matches than
USSR and Czechoslovakia.
Belgium
became the first nation to qualify from Europe by defeating France at home, in
a match where Michel Platini’s deployment as a striker was criticized.
While
in the same group, Holland lost ground by only tying Republic of Ireland at
home.
Yugoslavia
continued its march towards the Finals by defeating Denmark away.
Norway
inflicted on England one of its most humiliating defeats at Oslo that could
have cost England qualification.
England
still lead the group but only had one match remaining, while Romania and
Hungary had 3 and 4 more matches respectively.
At
the end of the month, West Germany maintained its one hundred percent record by
defeating Finland 7 to 1, with Rummenigge scoring a hat trick and the returning
Paul Breitner chipped in with two.
Scotland
got closer with a key win vs. Sweden and led the group by 4 points over
Northern Ireland with two matches remianing.
The
final phase of Asian qualification began with a scoreless tie between China and
New Zealand.

The
final phase of Asian qualification continued with New Zealand getting a key win
vs. China, but losing to Kuwait.
Poland
qualified for its third straight World Cup by defeating rivals East Germany
away.
Algeria
qualified for its first ever World Cup by eliminating Nigeria in the final
round playoff for the African zone.
Koln’s
young star Pierre Littbarski celebrated his international debut by scoring
twice vs. Austria in Vienna as West Germany maintained its perfect
qualification record and qualified for the finals.
Republic
of Ireland defeated France in Dublin to maintain some hope. Young AS Monaco
winger Bruno Bellone celebrated his debut with a goal.
France
were missing Dominique Rocheteau and Jean Tigana through injuries.
In
the same group, Holland defeated already neighbors Belgium (3-0) to also
maintain some hope. Holland had recalled Johann Neeskesns from NY Cosmos after
three years away.
Belgium
and Republic of Ireland completed all their qualification matches, Holland was
left with one match and France with two.
These
two results made it imperative for France to defeat Holland the next month to
have any chance of qualifying and step ahead of the current group runner-up
Ireland.
Hungary
defeated Switzerland and Norway at the end of the month to lead the group with
matches remainig. The battle for the second spot was now between England and
Romania.
Romania
was defeated at home by Switzerland and dented its qualification hopes. After
the match, Romania’s coaching triumvirate led by Valentin Stanescu was dismissed.
Mircea
Lucescu was appointed as the new coach of Romania.
Wales
lost an important point by tying Iceland at home, with one match remaining in
their schedule they still lead, however, the stronger teams of USSR and
Czechoslovakia appeared the likely qualifiers from the group with more matches
still in their schedule.
USSR
defeated Czechsolovakia at the end of the month in a key match.
Italy
gained a key point at Yugoslavia with Roberto Bettega netting his last goal for
Italy. Italy goalkeeper and Captain Dino Zoff earned his record equaling 94th
cap for Italy.
Portugal
were surprisingly beaten by Sweden at home and were eliminated. Israel
compounded on their misery by defeating them heavily (1-4).
At
this stage Sweden was the runner-up behind Scotland in the group, however, they
had completed their matches and Northern Ireland had a chance with one match
remaining.
World
Cup hosts Spain played Luxembourg for the first time ever in a friendly.
Argentina
lost at home for the first time in three years in a friendly to Poland, though
the focus was on the absence of Diego Maradona.

The
final phase of the CONCACAF zone were played in Honduras within the month. At
the end Mexico were surprisingly eliminated in a group that saw the hosts
Honduras and El Salvador qualify. The format of having the final phase in one
nation was later criticized by many.
Cameroon
qualified as the second African representative by eliminating Morocco.
In
Asia/Oceania, Kuwait gained the upper hand by defeating Saudi Arabia and China.
Austria
got the point it needed in Bulgaria to qualify, though its Manager Karl Stotz
was sacked .
Neighbors
West Germany won all eight of their qualifying matches by destroying Albania (8-0) and Bulgaria
(4-0). Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scored a hat trick vs. Albania and few days later
scored twice vs. Bulgaria. These Performances surely helped him to be elected
France Football’s Ballon d’Or for the second consecutive year.
Italy
tied Greece at home and acquired the point it needed to qualify. Italy were
missing Roberto Bettega through a serious injury that would sideline for the
rest of the season including the World Cup.
Italy
goalkeeper and Captain Dino Zofff earned his record breaking 95th
appearance.
On
November 22nd, Genoa Goalkeeper Silvano Martina struck Fiorentina’s
Giancarlo Antognoni right on the head. It left Giancarlo with a double fracture
of the skull. The collision caused internal bleeding and also caused
Antognoni’s heart to stop beating for almost half a minute. He would miss much
of thes eason because of this injury.
Greece
Manager Alketas Panagoulias quit his post at the end of the qualification
matches.
Poland
rounded out its qualifiers and once hundred percent record by defeating Malta
(6-0) at home.
Georg
Buschner managed East Germany for the last time in its qualifier vs. Malta.
England
qualified for its first World Cup since 1970 by defeating Hungary at Wembley.
A
week prior, Switzerland and Romania had played in a scoreless tie that had
helped England’s cause.
France
defeated Holland at Paris, with Platini scoring the first with one of his most
famous free kicks. They virtually qualified as all they had to do now was to
defeat Cyprus the following month. This was the end of the great Holland squad
that had reached two World Cup Finals in 1974 and 1978.
Northern
Ireland defeated Israel and qualified with British neighbors Scotland.
England
and Northern Ireland qualified with the worst record of any of the qualifiers,
total of 9 points each.
The
already qualified Scotland experimented in its final qualifier vs. Portugal in
an inconsequential losing effort. This was Scotland’s first loss in the
qualifiers.
USSR
defeated Wales at home to qualify along with Czechoslovakia.
Yugoslavia
rounded out its qualifiers by defeating Luxembourg and Greece away. They only
dropped points vs. Italy in their qualifying campaign.
Poland
goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski played his last match for his nation in the friendly
vs. Spain.

France
booked its place by defeating Cyprus as expected at Paris. The match was interrupted for more than 10
minutes in first half due to floodlight failure.
Italy
were roundly criticized in their slim home win vs. minnows Luxembourg. The
press were fiercely critical of Enzo Bearzot, who brushed aside the result and
explained the poor display due to injuries and lack of motivation, since they
had already qualified. Italy were missing long term injury victim Roberto
Bettega and Giancarlo Antognoni.
Kuwait
qualified from Asia/Oceania, while New Zealand was left to fight for another
day as they had to contend with a playoff vs. China in the new year.
For
Spain’s friendly vs. Belgium the new World Cup ball Tango-Espana made its
debut.
